SCAN-Lab Technical Notes 16: Comparison of Saturated Calomel Electrode (SCE) and Silver/Silver Chlo-ride Electrode (Ag/AgCl) using the M470

Latest updated: August 4, 2021

Introduction

The use of metallic mercury in the Saturated Calomel Electrode (SCE) Reference Electrode (RE) type means they are beginning to fall out of favor, and as a result the silver/silver chloride (Ag/AgCl) RE is being turned to as an alternative option. This note aims to compare the use of the SCE and Ag/AgCl REs for use in both dc- and ac-SECM.
